A boost for hands-on learning
AUSTIN — Texas has awarded more than $20 million in Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) grants to help schools purchase and install equipment for career and technical education, Governor Greg Abbott’s office announced on October 12.
Administered by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), the 84 awards cover public colleges, school districts and open-enrollment charter schools. The equipment is intended to help students prepare for high-demand occupations through programs leading to licenses, certificates or college degrees.
Recipients include Northwest Vista College for data science training, Brazosport College for nursing, Wharton County Junior College for HVAC training and San Jacinto Community College for maritime occupations. School-based awards also span healthcare, welding, engineering and other fields.
For nonprofits supporting employment and education, the list offers a practical starting point for local referrals and conversations with training providers. The announcement does not establish new nonprofit vacancies or guarantee training places for the public.
Find a relevant training pathway
Search by school, occupation or partner college. Narrow the list, add awards to your shortlist, then download the information you need.
Career areas are editorial groupings. Search matches names and occupations, not distance. School district awards may serve enrolled school students; a college partnership does not confirm public access. Shortlists remain only for this open session.

Answers to practical questions
Does this announcement mean training is free?
No. JET funds equipment purchases and installation. The release does not promise tuition waivers or cover each student’s expenses. Ask the provider for a written cost breakdown and available aid.
Can I apply for a JET grant myself?
TWC’s JET FAQ says individuals cannot apply. Your route is to explore an eligible training program at a funded institution and ask about enrollment and financial aid separately.
Can a nonprofit apply for this funding?
The announcement’s 2027 applicant categories cover specified public colleges, school districts, open-enrollment charter schools, the Texas Juvenile Justice Department and probation departments. It does not identify nonprofits generally as eligible direct applicants. Nonprofits can explore referral and support partnerships; exact eligibility belongs in the forthcoming application packet.
Does a school district award lead directly to an RN or engineering job?
The release names target occupations, but it does not describe every program’s credential sequence. School-based training may be one step toward further study or licensing. Confirm the actual qualification earned and any additional education, exams or work experience required.
Can adult learners or internationally trained professionals enroll?
The announcement does not specify individual eligibility. Ask about adult access, transcript evaluation, prerequisites, language support and recognition of previous learning. Do not assume a school district program is open to all adults or that prior overseas qualifications automatically transfer.
Are the student numbers current vacancies or open seats?
No. They are the numbers the awards are intended to help train, as reported in the release. They do not establish open enrollment slots, employer vacancies or job-placement guarantees. Dates and capacity need to be confirmed with each institution.

Watch for the next application round
The October 12 release says TWC plans to issue the 2027 JET Request for Applications later this fall. It gives no opening date or deadline. Eligible institutions should review the official packet when it is posted.
